Hotline Tip: Can My Boss Examine My Journal Entries?

My employer has asked to examine my notarial journal, and possibly photocopy several entries for his records. Is he authorized to see this information, or am I obligated to keep it confidential? – V.C., Charlotte, NC

Your employer may see any entries pertaining to their business operations; however if you perform notarizations outside of your employment, your employer does not have a right to copy or inspect those entries.

Hotline answers are based on the laws in the state where the question originated and may not reflect the laws of other states. If in doubt, always refer to your own state statutes. — The Editors
